A FOUR-year-old is taking on a month-long cycling challenge to raise money for a good cause. Chloe Sullivan from Carraroe is cycling 50km in aid of the North West Hospice, and in memory of her late grandfather Peter McCann, who passed away in 2014.

While his passing would normally be remembered every year with a family gathering, health guidelines ruled out any prospect of that happening this year.

Chloe’s mother Eira McCann said that they still wanted to do something practical and socially distanced.

“It is my dad’s seventh anniversary on Friday. The North West Hospice cared for him in his final days. We normally do something as a family on his anniversary and I was thinking of a different way we could remember him when we can’t all be together while also raising money for the hospice.”

The fundraising effort started among family and friends as Chloe embraced the opportunity to go cycling every day, not only for a good cause but also to simply enjoy her favourite activity on such a regular basis.

This quickly snowballed into donations from more than 100 people do date.

“Chloe is four and a half. She loves to go cycling up around Doorly Park. We decided this would be something enjoyable we could go and do every day. She knows money is being raised to help people who are sick, but for her the main thing is she is just getting out doing what she loves every single day.”

“I show her how much money is being raised every day when we go cycling. These figures go right over her at that age so for now it is mainly about getting out cycling every day and down the line hopefully it is something she can always look back on with a lot of pride, and we are all very proud of her.”

To date, €2,735 has been raised as Chloe’s 50km target remains well on course to be completed by St Patrick’s Day as hoped.

Eira said she has been amazed by the level of support received as donations have come flooding in from those they know well, and those simply wanting to do a good deed for a very worthy cause.

“Initially we set a target of €300 and the target has just been smashed several times over already. “I am blown away by the generosity of everyone. Family and friends have been very supportive in sharing it on social media, people who would have known my dad have donated and there have been a number of anonymous donations as well. It is a tough time for so many people, but to see these so many donations for the hospice has been fantastic.”

Donations can only be made online by visiting the fundraiser’s page on www.idonate.ie.
