Sligo can begin plans as LGFA reveal NFL schedule for 2021
is envisaged the future Emerging Talent programmes could also take place there.
The entire project will come to over €400,000 and this will require additional fundraising efforts from Sligo-Leitrim District Soccer League. It is hoped that further grants can be secured from Sligo County Council, Sligo Leader as well as the Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership.
At last Saturday’s project announcement at MacSharry Park were representatives from Sligo-Leitrim District Soccer League, including Joe Cleary (chairperson), Noel M Kennedy (secretary) and Robert Kennedy (treasurer). George Mullan of SIS Pitches was also present. He spoke of the additional pressure of working on a local venue such as MacSharry Park, revered by Sligo’s soccer community, and that this pressure was in fact greater than the experience of installing a playing surface for Argentina’s River Plate or, indeed, working in Tokyo for this year’s Olympic Games. “Being from the town, working on a pitch like this is what matters to me,” he said. “Grassroots football is what it is about.” Noel M Kennedy, meanwhile, highlighted the diligence of his fellow committee members in bringing the MacSharry Park project to this stage.
“This is a massive achievement for
Sligo-Leitrim to be going ahead with this development,” he said.
“We are blessed to have a person of the calibre of George Mullan and his company, SIS Pitches, on this job. George has a huge pride in what he does – they’ve worked on over 400 pitches in the UK alone.”
“Our facilities, when they are completed, will cater for kids and adults – we are delighted to be working with George Mullan and SIS Pitches on this.”
