Grattan Street is to get a new pub

- By John Bromley

A SHOP unit in the centre of Sligo town which has been closed for a number of years is to become a pub.

Brendan Power, Carricknagat, Collooney, has been granted planning permission for a change of use of the ground and first floors of number 25 Grattan Street from retail use to use as a public house.

Council planner Mairéad O’Hara said the building, which is between McHugh’s bar and Collery’s clothing shop, has been unoccupied for several years. Back in 2011 planning permission was granted for a change of use from retail to public house at ground floor level including internal access to McHugh’s Bar and for alterations to the existing windows.

Drawings submitted with the application show a bar downstairs with seating for around 20 people, with further seating upstairs for a further 22.

In her assessment the planner said that the application was for a change of use only and no works were proposed to the building.

She also added that along Grattan Street there was an adjoining bar which has been closed a number of years and there are no other bars on the street. There are two bars on Castle Street and it was not considered that this development would “create a concentration of bars/pubs in the area”.

Recommending the granting of planning permission, she said that overall it was considered to be in keeping with developments in the area, in keeping with the zoning objective and acceptable to the planning authority.
