SOLUTION TO ENNISCRONE NAMING SAGA COULD BE ON THE HORIZON

-

THE end of the long-running saga surrounding the name of a west Sligo town may finally be in sight. A solution to the Enniscrone/ Inishcrone plebiscite could be announced by the end of this month, according to Sligo-Leitrim TD Frank Feighan, who said that meetings between the department and legal teams will take place in the third week of this month. “People of Enniscrone and further afield are very anxious that this be resolved,” he said.

The town is widely known as

Enniscrone but the spelling of Inishcrone is officially recognised and is displayed on several prominent local buildings, while other buildings use the Enniscrone spelling. The use of both names has also caused confusion for visitors intending to visit the area according to Minister Feighan who said he had been seeking for this issue to finally be resolved.

“I've been pressing the minister in recent months and the department to bring this long-running issue to a head and I understand there is a certain amount of frustration locally about the delay in making this decision.”

“However, it is important that a formal decision like this must have legal standing. I understand there is ongoing legal advice which has been furnished to the department and meetings will take place in the third week of April when some indiciation will be made of how we go forward.”
