- By Alan Finn

SLIGO County Council will explore the possibility of carrying improvement works at Rathcarrick Wood Walkway near Strandhill.

A motion was brought before the council meeting on Monday by Cllr Tom MacSharry who said that residents in the had requested that pothole repair works and resurfacing be carried out.

Director of Services Dorothy Clarke said that the entrance to Rathcarrick Woods is not Sligo County Council property but that it would considered for a future maintenance programme where possible. “Sligo County Council carried out a site investigation of the highlighted location surrounding the entrance to Rathcarrick Woods and can confirm the area is not taken in charge by Sligo County Council,” she said. “Trail maintenance repair work to the Queen Maeve Trail surface in the area will be included in future maintenance programme, subject to Covid restrictions.”

She said Coillte oversees the land in question but said there is potential for inclusion on a maintenance programme as they have a good relationship with Sligo County Council. “While the car park area in question is Coillte property who own and manage the lands in question, Sligo County Council continue to have a strong and positive ongoing collaboration with the Coillte recreational team and the trail which extends out from the car park at Rathcarrick forms part of the Queen Maeve Trail, the most popular recreational trail in Sligo, on TripAdvisor.” “Any significant improvement and upgrade works at the Rathcarrick Wood car park will be considered as part of future funding application to the Outdoor Recreational Infrastructure Scheme.”

Cllr MacSharry welcomed the report and stated that he is “delighted there will be progress.”
