-

An elderly man has pleaded guilty to 11 charges of a sexual nature against a young female in the 1980s and 1990s at Sligo Circuit Court

The man, who cannot be identified, pleaded guilty to five charges of indecent assault under the Rape Act against a young female on dates between January 1, 1987, and January 1, 1991. He also pleaded guilty to five charges of sexual assault of the same young female on dates between January 1, 1992, and December 1, 1995.

He had already pleaded guilty to another charge of indecent assault at an earlier sitting against the same young female on dates between January 1 and March 31 in 1986.

All the offences happened at a location in county Sligo.

Defence counsel Des Dockery instructed by barrister Keith O’Grady and solicitor Gerry McGovern, said a psychiatrist, Dr Mary Maguire, had a report that stated the defendant was able to stand trial for the charges.

The court heard that there were a total of three female complainants. The defendant is facing a total of 85 charges.

Mr Dockery said the defence would need some more time to consider other allegations.

State Prosecutor Leo Mulrooney asked for the case be put back to June 15 for the preparation of a victim impact report. He asked that it be on the basis that the matter will proceed to sentence on that date.

The defendant was remanded on continuing bail until June 15.
