Sadness at death of Carbury school principal Alan Moffitt

-

THE DEATH has occurred of Carbury National School principal Alan Moffitt.

Mr Moffitt, from the Drum Road in north Sligo, passed away peacefully at home on Monday following a long illness.

He served as principal of Carbury for more than 20 years and oversaw some major developments for the school – most notably its transformation from a 1970s building to a modern, two-storey school, which was completed in 2013. Carbury National School is situated next door to Calry Parish Church on the Mall.

Canon Patrick Bamber knew Alan Moffitt well during his time as the school’s principal and paid tribute to him as a leader fondly remembered by generations of pupils.

He said: “Alan looked every inch a leader. For generations of pupils in Carbury he was held in high regard. He had a tremendous memory for names and an eye for detail.

“Occasions when the whole school gathered were run with care and precision – pupils smartly dressed in neat rows, sitting silently listening and then singing heartily, with encouragement from Mr Moffitt such as, ‘let’s really hear you now’.”

Alan was a member of the Moffitt family, who own the department store bearing their name on O’Connell Street.

His brothers Keith and Stephen are in business together for several years while his sister Linda has been involved in business both locally and elsewhere, including previously serving as the president of Sligo Chamber of Commerce.

Alan is also survived by his brother-in-law Paddy Dwyer, sisters-in-law Olivia and Jill, nephews and nieces Arthur, Eleanor, Ivan, Charlotte, Johnston and Matthew.

His funeral service takes place today, Thursday, at 2pm in Lissadell Church of Ireland. Burial will take place afterwards in Drumcliffe churchyard.

Due to current Covid-19 restrictions the funeral will be private.
