McDermott plays in humbling of Wales
Riverstown’s
Aoife McDermott was part of the Ireland women’s rugby team that got their Women’s Six Nations campaign off to a flying start last Saturday – a 45-0 hammering of Wales at Cardiff Arms Park.
McDermott started in the second row – this was her 14th international appearance – for a fixture that Ireland would dominate. Ahead 31-0 at the break, the winners notched seven tries in total, including two each from Eimear Considine and rising star Beibhinn
Parsons.
Five of Ireland’s tries came in the first-half. In the second-half McDermott, who played the entire fixture, looked to have scored her country’s sixth try but the score was disallowed after a TMO decision.
This was a second mauling for Wales, who lost 53-0 away to France the weekend before (incidentally the Welsh were also 31-0 adrift at half-time in that game). Ireland take on France this Saturday at Energia Park, Donnybrook (2.15pm) in their second pool fixture.
