CLOONACOOL

SYMPATHIES: Our community was shocked and saddened this past week to hear of two deaths locally. Sympathies are extended to the family and friends of Peadar O’Dwyer of Rockfield (formerly of Carnaleck) and to the family and friends of Frank Gavaghan of Tullycusheen. Both men were highly regarded in their communities and they will be missed very much by those who knew and loved them.

PARK LOTTO: The Community Park lotto draw for April took place at the weekend for a jackpot of €5,300. The numbers drawn were 8, 10, 25 and 26. Unfortunately there were no winners of the jackpot. There were two match-three winners; Joe McIntyre and Ronan Leonard. The winner of the Surlis’ SuperValu voucher was Jordan Brennan. Congratulations to all our winners and many thanks for your continued support. The Community Park committee would also like to extend sympathy to the Gavaghan family, Tullycusheen, on the death of Frank Gavaghan. Frank was a wonderful supporter of all our fundraising events down the years.

LAMBING SEASON: As the lambing season draws to a close locally, reports are generally of a successful campaign. The reasonably nice weather of recent has been a big help. The latest crop of lambs brings a real air of spring to the fields around Cloonacool at this time of year. The local farmers can enjoy a more relaxed period in their calendar now with less early morning and late-night checking of stock.

DAWN CHORUS: As Easter approaches and school holidays occur it is the perfect time of year to enjoy the Dawn Chorus. The seasonal display by wild birds often goes unnoticed in the morning rush. The quiet lanes and wooded areas in the parish are the perfect locations to hear this performance

of early morning bird song. Why not get up early – 6am is about right at present – take on the adventure with family and return home an hour later to a nice warm breakfast. DARKNESS INTO LIGHT 2021: Why not create your own version of this event? Darkness Into Light invites you to join Pieta and Electric Ireland on May 8, 2021, for a special Darkness Into Light sunrise. Even though we can’t gather together, we can still walk under one sunrise, holding in our hearts all those impacted by suicide and self-harm. Each and every year, your vital support enables Pieta to change the lives of thousands of people struggling with suicidal thoughts, or self-harming. Email Info@darknessintolight.ie.

PADDY COLLERAN: Paddy Colleran, a native of Currcunnane, a member of An Garda Síochána, was a member Sligo team who won the 1922 Connacht Football Championship Final which they played against Galway in 1923 (delayed due to the Civil War).

They then went on to take on Tipperary and beat them However, Galway objected to Sligo winning Connacht and there was a replay which Sligo lost as two of Paddy’s brothers Jim and Ned were not available as they had returned to Maynooth and also Peter Harte and they were not allowed to play. Paddy still made GAA history in his footballing exploits. He went on and won a Connacht medal with his native Sligo in 1928. He has also the distinction of playing for six different counties, three different provinces and also played for Ireland in 1928 against the USA in the Tailteann Games.
