North Sligo AC’s teens keep active
DURING this year’s lockdown – which began in January and is ongoing, albeit with certain restrictions easing – North Sligo AC were committed to keeping their teenage members active.
A 13-week programme ensued and the virtual fitness challenge, initially brought in for January, was extended up until Easter Sunday. Thirty-four athletes signed up for the programme from the club coaches that offered the choice of four weekly training sessions. These sessions, which varied from week to week, tested various aspects of fitness, including speed, strength and endurance.
Twelve of the 34 participants completed three sessions per week, with a further 12 averaging two sessions each week.
Some who were carrying injuries stayed involved by walking and cycling, while many also concurrently took part in the Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership’s Feel
Good 5k Schools Challenge.
The club organised a draw for spot prizes, with the 34 teens in the running for prizes.
RunPod, Sligo’s dedicated running shop, generously sponsored a pair of runners – these were won by Grace McCarthy. The club thank John Delaney (RunPod) for this prize.
The lucky winner of North Sligo AC gear (a prize sponsored by the club) was Kate Walsh, with running socks going to the trio of Aoife Kelly, Ellie Haran and Keelan Gilmartin. Following the conclusion of this successful virtual challenge, North Sligo AC was delighted with the response and participation levels of its teenage members. “The club coaches would like to acknowledge the tremendous commitment and unquenchable spirit of this group of athletes during a difficult time in their lives and look forward to seeing them in action in person towards the end of the month,” said a club statement.
