Tributes after loss of youth worker George

George Maguire, from Cranmore, passed away on Saturday in Galway Hospital Described as ‘great friend’ and ‘a role model’ in tributes

TRIBUTES have been paid to George Maguire, who died at the weekend. George passed away at Sligo University Hospital on Saturday.

The Cranmore native – originally from Benson Drive – was well known in his community and throughout Sligo town as a tireless and dedicated worker for young people and families.

George had a lengthy associatio­n with the Avalon Centre on Chapel Street and was a member of the team there for over 20 years.

A message on behalf of the board members outlined George’s enormous contributi­on.

“Everyone here at the Avalon Centre is deeply saddened about the passing of our great friend and colleague George Maguire. “During his time at St Anne’s Youth & Community Centre and subsequent­ly the Avalon Centre, George was a role model, an advocate and a champion for the countless children, young people and families he worked with.” “His tireless work and commitment ensured that the Avalon Centre had the most sought after summer camps in the region, ‘Our Show’ selling out year after year, and multitudes of children and young people attending the weekly youth clubs and special needs programmes.” “George’s gentle manner, big smile and hearty laugh greeted everyone who was privileged to encounter him here in the Avalon Centre.

“His years of dedication and allegiance to his community will never be forgotten and everyone here at the centre will always honour his memory by building on the foundation­s of his incredible work.”

“Your sudden death has touched our lives and hearts, George. The way you have inspired us has touched us even more.” Sarah Middleton of Beat It Dance School also paid tribute to George who she fondly associates with the annual ‘Our Show’ held in the Hawk’s Well Theatre which showcases the talents of the many children who attend various classes at the centre.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of George Maguire’s passing.”

“What a special and wonderful man who did incredible work with youth of Sligo and so encouragin­g for all of Beat It Dance School who were lucky enough to of known him and a great friend.”

“On top of his director/backstage manager roles for Our Show, this dance act was a favourite of his and he always took immense pride getting costumes from New York and EJs for these kids.”

“My sincere condolence­s to all the Maguire Family, William Monaghan, Frankie Langan, all staff of St Anne’s YC/Avalon and close friends of George.”

George is survived by his siblings Veronica, Margie, Tommy, Marion, Patricia, Kaki, Jim, Martin, Jackie, Paul, Pat, Darren, Beverlie and Natasha, aunts, uncles, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandnephe­ws and grandniece­s.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday morning at St Anne’s Church followed by burial at Sligo Cemetery.
