Two-minute beach clean appeal made

- By John Bromley

PEOPLE in county Sligo are being asked to sign up to receive a two-minute beach clean kit and join in the Clean Coasts programme mission to protect our coast, sea and waterways.

The Irish coast offers numerous opportunities to have fun and an increasing number of people are enjoying the beautiful coastal areas in county Sligo, whether it is for sea swimming, water sports or simply to enjoy the stunning landscape. However, we have all seen marine litter along our coastline. For all beach lovers this is an opportunity to do something about it in just two minutes.

Clean Coasts wants you to visit their website and pledge to do a #2minutebeachclean to receive a reusable individual beach clean kit containing a tote bag and gloves. The next time you are out and about along the coast or near a waterway, take two minutes to pick up some litter you see, share a picture of it on social media tagging Clean Coasts and using the hashtag #2minutebeachclean and dispose of the litter properly.

Coastal Communities Manager Sinead McCoy said: “Every day, so many people around Ireland share their #2minutebeachclean on social media, and that helps show how easy it is to get involved and make a difference.

“By taking part, not only are you making an immediate positive impact for the marine environment and wildlife, but it’s also a chance to spend time outdoors by the sea, exercise and even practice mindfulness.” Giulia Oeschger, AKA Keep Sligo Clean social media, is a supporter of the campaign.

She said: “Doing a #2minbeachclean is a great way to reduce the amount of litter in our environment. “It is so simple and easy, everyone can do it. Seeing litter, particularly in the woods or close to the water, always annoyed me and I wanted to do something about it. So when I found out about clean coasts’ #2minbeachclean campaign I immediately requested a kit. It is great to do something that contributes to protecting our precious ecosystems from litter and helps preserve the beautiful, natural landscapes we all enjoy.” Sligo-based travel blogger Aiva from Our Crossings has been supporting the #2minutebeachclean with her family.

‘’Living just a few feet away from the ocean, we’ve developed something of a personal connection with the coast. I love how the molecular ions in the salty air and all characteristics of the ocean’s rhythms have this mystically astounding ability to ignite our souls with boundless curiosity and have the power to fill us up with an immeasurable sense of peace.

“Therefore, we are passionate about beach clean-ups and love putting in a bit of work with something as simple as a#2minutebeachclean to ensure sandy stretches of coast around Sligo stay clean of litter. “Plastic bottles, food wrappers, and empty beer cans don’t just make Sligo shores look unseemly, they also significantly impact the environment and marine animals. Taking part in the #2minutebeachclean and doing something for the greater good of a community and the environment has enriched our life’s and made us appreciate our oceans even more.”
