Some amazing walks and hikes in the North

SINCE the pandemic began last year, many people took up walking and hiking as a pasttime or rediscover­ed both activities.

More than a year on, this newfound interest has been maintained by those active enthusiast­s who are, no doubt, keen to take in trails a little further from home.

Listed below are five walking and hiking trails in Northern Ireland, perfect for all levels as well as families.

SLIEVE BINNIAN: If you are interested in hiking, why not try one of Northern Ireland’s most scenic mountains.

Slieve Binnian is one of the Mourne Mountains in Co. Down. Including breaks, the trek up and down takes approximat­ely seven hours and as described as an intermedia­te-level hike.

SLIEVE GULLION: Slieve Gullion, a scenic walking trail in Newry, Co. Antrim, is considered one of Northern Ireland’s hidden gems. The forest park is full of peaceful trails which talk in amazing mountain views. The main 10km trail takes in the woodlands and takes you straight to the summit where you can find a Bronze Age tomb and views of multiple counties.

If you cannot walk the whole way, a large amount of this particular trail can be driven on.

GLENARIFF FOREST PARK: This is another Co. Antrim location.

Glenariff offers the experience of an enchanted forest walk which includes planted woodland, lakes, outdoor recreation­al spaces and areas of conservati­on.

There is a number of walking trails throughout the park which is full of wildlife, plant life and three waterfalls.

Glenariff is open to the public and provides for many outdoor activities, including walking, hiking, and horse riding. There are recreation­al areas such as picnic and barbeque areas, as well as a tea house.

CULCAIGH BOARDWALK: This Co. Fermanagh walk has become a popular location for scenic photos.

Known also as the ‘Stairway To Heaven’. Visiting Culcaigh is something everyone should have on their bucket list if they intend on visiting Northern Ireland.

This trail is just outside Enniskille­n.

The staircase itself is steep, but it is worth it for the breathtaki­ng views. The walk from the car park to the summit is roughly two hours. TOLLYMORE FOREST PARK: This park walk is located in Co. Down.

It is five miles long, running along the

Shimna River through wooded areas with beautiful views of the Mournes and woodland terrain.

Luke’s Mountain peak can be seen from the trail, along with various wildlife.

There is surroundin­g facilities for campers and families. The trail is considered ideal for novice hikers.
