Walk through our prehistoric past at Cavan’s Burren Park

-

CAVAN Burren Park has been described as a “mythical, spiritual landscape of monuments, megalithic tombs, hut sites and pre-bog walls all of which survive from pre-historic times” and they are located within metres of each other. Cavan Burren Park opened to the public in May 2014. But the site itself goes back a little longer, probably around 340 million years to the Carboniferous period when this whole area was covered in a shallow tropical sea.

Today you can experience a wonderful interpretative centre and five amazing walking trails around Cavan Burren Park, all highlighting the spectacular prehistoric tombs, fantastic geology and special stories that make this such a unique environment.

Carefully placed interpretation throughout this site explains all the features as you take in the 360° views. Stories of giants and moving glaciers come to life with every step you take in this breathtaking prehistoric park.

There are superb examples of megalithic tombs in Cavan Burren Park including wedge and portal tombs, dating from the Neolithic Period. A great number of archaeological riches have been found here, including ancient huts, relict field walls, a promontory fort, cist graves and ‘modified boulder’ monuments. Many examples of prehistoric rock art have also been identified. All of these features combine to make Cavan Burren Park one of the finest integrated prehistoric landscapes in Ireland.

Cavan Burren Park offers stunning views of Cuilcagh Mountain, west Cavan and the greater Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark.

Entrance to the park is free and for the summer (May to Aug) is open 7am to 11pm.

It is just off the N16 Sligo – Enniskillen route, not far from the village of Blacklion. You take the N16 Sligo road out of Blacklion and just before you leave the village take a road to the left signposted ‘Cavan Burren Park’. Follow the signs from here for approximately 4km until you reach Cavan Burren Park.
