The fun returns at Sligo Tennis Club as members enjoy club competitions

-

IN RECENT weeks members of Sligo Tennis Club were delighted to return to the sport they love once the Covid19 restrictions eased.

Monday, May 10 marked the resumption of a popular club competition – the ladies doubles – with good games despite the weather.

Alice McNassor showed winning form, also active on court two were Olwyn Devins and Sinead Gallagher. Claire Carroll and Barbara Curran won against the pairing of Joy O’Brien and Debbie McGoldrick. There was also success for the combination of Louise McGirl and Olivia Seery – they overcame the challenge of Kathleen Mitchell and Maeve Conlon.

The following evening, Tuesday, the men’s doubles returned. There were good displays from Arthur Mullen, Trevor Johnson, John Scott and James Doyle, who took the prize in his group.

Wednesday evening was for the female tennis players – this time playing singles matches.

In balmy conditions the competitors included Sinead Gallagher, Francoise Armstrong, Ann Armstrong, Maura Murphy, Ann McKiernan, Mairead Crawford, Freda McDonnell, Phil Conheady, Ann Barry, Sheila McCormack, Olivia Seery, Beatrice Murtagh and Pauline McLoughlin. Among the standout players were Sinead Gallagher, Ann McKiernan and Freda McDonnell. There were stalemates between Sheila McCormack and Olivia Seery and in the duel of Beatrice Murtagh and Pauline McLoughlin – a coin toss decided both outcomes.

The Thursday action on Sligo Tennis Club’s courts consisted of men’s singles matches. Having been idle (in a tennis sense) since December, this was this group’s first court appearance of 2021.

The participants included some heavy hitters from the club’s top table – president Mel McKeown, tennis captain Brian King and ex-president Seamus O’Toole.

Also playing were Mick Coleman, Barry Egan, Brian Fahey (back with the club after time in Dublin), Christy Hennessy, Gavin Deasy, Mark Wirtz and club newcomer Nigel Eeles. In perfect playing conditions, the night’s winners included Mick Coleman, Barry Egan, Christy Hennessy, Mark Wirtz and Nigel Eeles.

For many of these players, the objective was to enjoy the tennis but not to overexert themselves and therefore risk getting injured.

The members are looking forward to more great club competitions in the coming weeks.
