UPSANDDOWNS

-

2016: Sligo remained in Division Two after a relegation play-off defeat of Meath. Prior to this trapdoor fixture, they lost six of their seven fixtures. In the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship, however, Sligo fared better – reaching the semi-final but they fell to Kildare after extra-time.

2017: The National Football League saw

Sligo retain their Division Two status after three wins (and four defeats). The All-Ireland Intermediate Championship was another

‘what if’ journey. Sligo reached the semi-final but were beaten by Tyrone. The margin at Kingspan Breffni Park was eight points.

2018: Sligo endured relegation from the second tier of the NFL after a disastrous run of seven losses (from seven games). But the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship saw a revival as Sligo reached the last four – they lost to Tyrone by four points in Ballyshannon.

2019: Despite management upheaval, Sligo were All-Ireland Intermediate Championship semi-finalists for the fourth successive year. Sligo also won five of their seven fixtures in Division Three of the NFL, qualified for the final (after beating Roscommon in the semifinal) but lost to Meath at Clones.

2020: They were in relegation trouble – with five losses – when the NFL season was ended due to the pandemic. There was no solace in the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship as Sligo lost all three of their group games, conceding 17 goals in the process.
