Grattan Street shop premises to be extended
PLANNING permission has been granted for an extension to a presently unoccupied shop in Sligo town. Fintan O’Neill applied for approval for the construction of an extension to the rear of the retail premises at ground floor and also to construct a first floor storage area with staff facilities.
The shop fronts onto Grattan Street (beside EJ’s Little Sister) with rear access along Water Lane.
It is proposed to extend the premises by 84 square metres, approximately 10 square metres of this at ground floor level and the remainder at first floor.
The council planner Mairéad O’Hara noted that the premises had been unoccupied for a period of time and was previously a clothing store. She said that the development was for an extension of an existing use “which is complimentary to the main commercial function of the city centre and accordingly would be consistent with the zoning for the site”.
The planner said that the adjoining sites were retail units, some with above ground floor apartments and to the east of the site a pub.
“It is not considered that the increase in the retail storage space at first floor level will impact on the surrounding properties,” she said. She said the application proposes no changes to the front facade and the extension would not be visible from the public road.
