750km Mizen to Malin cycle challenge in Kyle’s memory

- By Alan Finn

A GROUP of friends and family of a young Sligo man who tragically passed away last year are taking on a cycling challenge for charity in his memory.

Cycle For Kyle has been organised in memory of Kyle Luby, a native of Ballintogher who died unexpectedly in Vancouver, Canada, in May 2020.

The group – consisting of Kyle’s brother Gavin and friends Shéa Murray, Joseph Murray, Jamie Murray, Padraic Duffy and Ryan Duffy – will cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head across seven days.

The cycle is taking place in aid of North West Stop, a suicide and self-harm prevention charity which works by informing, educating and promoting positive suicide prevention policies throughout the west and North West of Ireland for people of all ages.

In a post about the initiative on their GoFundMe page, Gavin said: “Last year I lost my brother Kyle to suicide. Kyle was a fun-loving, adventurous, free-spirited man who embraced life. Anyone lucky to know him knew he spread joy wherever he went and collected a large network of friends.” “A group of Kyle’s friends and I are taking on the biggest challenge of our lives. Cycling over 750km, from Mizen Head to Malin Head over seven days at the end of May.”

“We hope to overcome this tough route, to raise muchneeded funds for the excellent work and services provided by North West Stop.

“Any donation, large or small, ensures they are able to help more people in need in our communities across the North West.” The group will start off at Mizen Head, reaching Kenmare by the end of their first day. They will then take in Ballylongford, Galway and Westport before reaching Sligo at the end of day five. The cycle will conclude at Malin Head two days later via Ballybofey.

Cycle For Kyle will begin on Monday, May 31, and finish on Monday, June 6.
