Clubs can start plans as season gets closer

Sligo GAA’s Competitions Control Committee unveil master fixtures calendar and formats for adult inter-club competitions

- SENIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUES

SLIGO GAA’s Senior Gaelic Football Leagues are returning for 2021. Last year’s lockdown and restrictions meant that these competitions weren’t played.

The structures for this year have been tweaked, however, resulting in a truncated format.

Division One of the Senior Football League, which has nine teams, will be divided into two sections – Division 1A (five teams) and Division 1B (four teams).

It is expected that the competition will be completed over five weekends. In Division 1A, each team plays four games. The top team progresses to the final and the bottom team goes into the relegation final.

There are three group games for each of the four teams in Division 1B. There is a play-off between the top two and the winner is through to the final. The play-off for the relegation final is between the teams that finish third and fourth – the loser then takes on the worst team from Division 1A.

The loser of the relegation final is relegated to Division 2 for 2022. Division Two of the Senior Football League, which also has nine teams, follows a similar format to that of the top tier.

Division 2A will be the five-team group, with four teams in Division 2B. The Division Two champions are promoted and the relegation final losers drop to the Senior Football League’s third tier.

There are eight teams in Division Three. The participants will be split into two even groups, Division 3A (four teams) and Division 3B (four teams). After three rounds of group games, the top two in each section qualify for the semi-finals.

The top team in Division 3A plays the second-placed side from Division 3B, with the leading side from Division 3B up against the team that finished second in Division 3A.

The relegation play-offs will feature the bottom two of each section.

The loser of the relegation final will play in next year’s Division Four and the Division Three winners are promoted.

Meanwhile, the format of Division Four of the Senior Football League has yet to confirmed by Sligo GAA’s Competitions Control

Committee – this depends on the number of entries received.

The first round of the Senior Football Leagues (Division One, Division Two and Division Three) is scheduled for the weekend of June 19-20. Division Four begins the weekend before, June 12-13.
