Work to begin on €200,000 Collooney-Ballisodare path

-

WORKS are scheduled to begin in the coming weeks on a new footpath linking Collooney to Ballisodare.

A fund of €200,000 was recently allocated under the Active Travel Scheme for the provision of the path.

At a recent meeting of Sligo County Council, Cllr Thomas Walsh had called for an update on the project.

Cllr Walsh said that “it is vital we progress this as soon as possible” as it is a “key piece of infrastructure”.

The motion was supported by Cllr Thomas Healy who said the project will be “money well spent” and that it is a “massive opportunity for walking and cycling between the villages.”

Acting director of services Emer Concannon said that the contract is expected to commence either this month or in July and is to last for a period of 10 weeks.

Fine Gael’s Cllr Walsh has since welcomed the news in a statement released last week. “Ballisodare and Collooney are two large adjacent satellite towns connected by the R290 Regional road.

“The R290 was the N4 national route up until the mid 1990s and had a dedicated pedestrian footpath linking the two villages. This footpath has deteriorated and in practical terms essentially disappeared over the years due to road resurfacing etc and needs to be completely reinstated.

“I am delighted that works on this vital piece of infrastructure will begin in the coming weeks which will allow for a much improved and safe connection between our two villages.”
