Enniscrone Men’s Shed have started their fifth session of six weeks Rowing Class online with Sligo Sports Recreation Partnership all enjoying the classes. STRANGE DIGGINGS: There has been some amusing speculation as to why four long strips of clay have appeared in the Castle Field – everything from garden plots and potato patches, to long jump pits and drone plane runways. They were in fact dug as part of an archaeological assessment of the area as a prerequisite to seeking planning permission for the proposed running track within the Castle Field.
The Castle Field is an area of archaeological importance with the remains of megalithic tombs on the ridge, the imposing castle ruins and the ringfort all in close proximity, plus the ruins of Valentine’s Church and graveyard are located alongside the field.
No archaeological artifacts were found within the trenches excavated so hopefully the development of the track by the Running Track sub-committee of Enniscrone and District Community Council can get approval to go-ahead soon.
