Five entertaining finals wrap up U-14 action from 2020
SLIGO GAA’s U-14 Gaelic football competitions from 2020 were concluded on Bank Holiday Monday. Five finals were played in the ‘A’ and ‘B’ grades, with two deciders taking place at Markievicz Park and three games hosted by the Sligo GAA Centre of Excellence in Scarden.
Each of these Expert Electrical sponsored finals were highscoring, with a total of 112 scores produced (37 goals and 75 points). Supporters were also present due to further relaxing of Covid-19 restrictions.
Eastern Harps scored 6-12 when winning the U-14 ‘A’ Football Championship Cup final at Markievicz Park. They had 21 points to spare over Drumcliffe Rosses Point, who tallied 2-3.
The winners were in control at half-time with a lead of 2-8 to 1-1. Cian Carty impressed for Harps, scoring 1-5, with teammate Cillian Duggan shooting three goals. Harps’ other top scorer was Marty Murray, who supplied 1-4.
Michael Carroll netted twice for Drumcliffe-Rosses Point, whose best player was Eamon Keane.
Also played at Markievicz Park on Monday was the U-14 ‘B’ Football Championship title decider between St John’s and Shamrock Gaels. St John’s almost scored as many goals as points, 8-9, when overcoming Shamrock Gaels. It finished 8-9 to 5-6.
Gary Farren (3-3), Daire Patton (1-4) and Oisin Mullane (2-1) were the most lethal finishers for St John’s.
Niall Kenny tried his utmost for Shamrock Gaels, scoring 2-3, with Keilan Hannon on target
with three goals.
At Scarden, meanwhile, there were silverware endings for Coolera-Strandhill, Easkey-St Farnan’s and St Molaise Gaels. St Molaise Gaels beat Enniscrone-Kilglass by six points, 3-11 to 4-2, in the U-14 ‘A’ Football Championship Shield final. Coolera-Strandhill were victorious against Curry, 2-11 to 3-5, in the U-14 ‘B’ Football Championship Shield decider. West Sligo combination EaskeySt Farnan’s defeated another amalgamation, Ballymote Bunninadden, in the U-14 ‘B’ Football Championship Plate final. Eight points was the difference here, 3-9 to 1-7.
The referees on duty for these finals included Michael Conway, Mark Connell, Cathal Martyn, Gavin Cawley and Joe Hynes.
