DROGHEDA UNITED (Home)

A WEEK is a long time in politics. The same can also be said of the

SSE Airtricity League Premier Division. Leaders Sligo Rovers welcome Drogheda United to The Showgrounds this Saturday – the first game for both after the midseason break.

Drogheda are fourth, nine points behind Rovers. It is the Louth club’s current position after 14 games that has surprised many. But last year’s First

Division champions have shown consistency where the likes of Bohemians, Dundalk and Derry

City haven’t.

When Rovers played Drogheda at Head in the Game Park on

April 30, it took Johnny Kenny’s smoothly-taken equaliser to cancel out Chris Lyons’ opener for the hosts.

Ex-Rovers striker Lyons, who has scored five goals this season, is a different, more deadlier version of the forward who had a brief spell at The Showgrounds in 2016. Another former Rovers player, Ronan Murray, has rediscovered his form with Drogheda, whose top scorer is Mark Doyle (he has seven goals so far).

Since that stalemate in Drogheda, a game Rovers were fortunate to get something from, the Bit O’Red have gone six games unbeaten, a vibrant sequence that includes five wins.

Drogheda have as many draws as Rovers (4) and have won almost half of their 14 games (six victories) along with four losses.
