We want to thank Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership for running the Open Water Swimming lessons for the second year at the pier.

This would not be possible without the work of Mary Dunne and Diane Middleton (we consider them honorary Enniscrone women at this stage).

Last year was the first year of the programme and due to its success the numbers have doubled with over 100 people attending the eight-week swimming course this year.

This gives Enniscrone more classes than any other individual area in Ireland.

We would like to thank all the instructors and lifeguards that make these classes possible in particular Tomás Lynn, who is a huge factor in the growth in popularity of the classes.

Again we are grateful to

Swim Ireland and Sligo Sports Partnership, who hope to run swimming weeks for child aged seven to 14 this summer at the pier. Details to be confirmed and announced shortly.

Learning how to swim safely in the sea when you live near Enniscrone is not just an excerise class it is a life skill so thank you to everyone who makes these classes possible.

Kieran is raising funds for some wonderful causes. Under-17. Castleconnor 2-09 v Eastern Harps 2-20. After a whirlwind start where the team stormed in to a 1-2 to no score lead after five minutes, the game drifted away from the team after the first half water break where Eastern Harps scored heavily to establish a commanding lead at half time. While the team battled hard in the second half we could never close the gap to less than six. Hard luck to team and management. The next game is this Thursdaty, June 17 at home to St Molaise Gaels.

Team on duty. Jack Byron,

Eoghan Durkan, Barry Kilcullen, Lee Gilmartin, Cian Flynn, Pádraig Gavin, Cathal Feeney, Stephen Rogan, Darragh Flynn, Seán Donegan, Paul Ruane, Oisin Quinn, Darragh Stenson Subs used: Michael Sheridan, Matthew Langan, Fionn Gordon, Christopher Young, Séamus Foody.

Division 4. The team had a first outing in the league away to Calry. It was a competitive game with us eventually losing out 2-9 v 2-13. Benson Cup. Castleconnor 0-9 v Geevagh 1-7

In the season opener in sunny Corballa, the team lost out by a point to Geevagh after a competitive affair. With a strong breeze behind us in the opening half it took nine minutes for Paul Flynn to open the scoring from long range. With further points from Ronan Wilson (two from play), a Thomas Langan free and an Odhran Quinn point we were in five points to one lead heading towards the half time whistle. However, the concession of a soft goal on the stroke of half time after a Geevagh player rose highest on the edge of the square to fist to the net after a 35m free had dropped short; meant there was only one point in it at half time.

Geevagh pushed on in the second half and led by 1-7 v 0-6 with 15 minutes remaining. A strong finish by the lads with points from Eoin Kent, Thomas Langan and Eoghan Flynn left it a one-point game with a few minutes to play. However, we failed to work the scoreboard in the final minutes.

Team on duty were K Healy, R Keane, K Earlis, F Boland, L Naughton, C Barrins, R Healy, C Kilcullen, E Kent, R Wilson, B Howley, P Flynn, P Cooney, O’Quinn, T Langan Subs used: E Flynn, D Barrins.

The team are out in Rd.1 of the league next Saturday away to Drumcliffe at 19.00.

All in the club would like to wish senior player Liam Naughton a speedy recovery after a nasty injury, received in the home fixture last Sunday v Geevagh.

The team were out in round one of the league on Monday evening at home to Geevagh/St Michael’s. After a competitive first half the opposition overpowered this young team in the second half to win comfortably.

Team on duty

D Feeney, P Reape, C Stenson, N Holmes, D Harrison, F Gordon, F Egan, T Sheridan, O’Gavin, K Sexton, K Rutledge, B Cawlet, C Donegan, TJ Foody, F Gavin Sub Used: J.O’ Regan.

The Castleconnor Cúl Camp is planned for the week July 12 to July 16 Registration is open and can be completed online at kelloggsculcamps.gaa.ie/

SLIGO V MAYO 1948: It was a bright Sunday morning in

June 1948 as Chris Brett, his father Mike, Broher and grandfather Martin Brett, Carrowilkeen, waited at Curry train station for the special football train to take them to Sligo for the Connacht Football Championship game between Mayo v Sligo in the Showgrounds. The train required two engines to pull it as it stretched from Henry’s Rail Cottage in Drimbane to across the bridge over the Owengarve river. Chris’s grandfather had arranged that they would travel on board one of the engines.

The Mayo fans were in full voice as now they were in enemy territory having crossed the border at Bellaghy.

His grandfather had brought a tin whistle with him and they sang a few songs on the way.

Chris will always remember being almost crushed on the half way line, enthralled by the game, not realising he was watching the future and last Mayo All-Ireland winning team. Lasting memories were watching in awe at the display and dazzling solo runs given by Mayo’s skillful Padraig Carney and Sligo’s Frank White’s work rate. The scoreline on day finished with Mayo scoring 4-2 to Sligo’s 1-5

At the Sligo station for the homeward journey his grandfather Martin failed to show up and the train had to leave without him. Chris’s two aunts, who had responsibility for him, were distraught and were scared how they would explain to their mother returning without her husband. However, eureka, as it rattled its way through the cutting at Cashel Hill, in sight of their homestead who should they spot but Chris’s grandfather bringing in the cows. He had taken a lift back to Carrowilkeen, with Paddy Marren, Curry.

After alighting from the train back in Curry, Chris and his father, accompanied Bill McGuinn and his lovely daughter Philomena, who informed them that they had a meal in the Cafe Cairo.

But Chris recalls, “we had to drudge up the rail line back home to Broher which was the nearest route. On arrival home mother’s cooking was cherished. I was hungry, happy and exhausted.

This was the beginning of my life long love of my parish and the GAA.” Chris, now in his eighties, is happily retired in Berkenhead, Liverpool, having emigrated to England but never losing touch with the parish of Curry which he cherishes, its GAA activities and keeping an eye onpolitics. We remember all those mentioned in his memories all of whom have passed on.
