TD’s cryptic tweet gets a big reaction
A TWEET made by a local TD on Sunday garnered plenty of attention online.
Marc MacSharry sent out a tweet from his personal Twitter account over the weekend consisting simply of two sentences, accompanied with an image of a chicken.
The text read: “If an egg is broken by an outside force, life ends, if broken by inside force, life begins. Great things always begin from the inside.”
The nature of the tweet prompted plenty of reaction, with some people comparing it to vague motiviational quotes or memes which are regularly seen across social media platforms. “Ah, the auld cryptic break up messages that ya hope your ex knows are about him,” tweeted Independent senator Lynn Ruane. Kildare-based Social Democrats councillor Chris Pender said: “You ok hun? Pm me.” Mark Hennessy, the news editor of the Irish Times, said: “Marc

Some commenters saw the post as implying that there will be a coup within the party. Richard Chambers, news correspondent with Virgin Media News, said: “In generations they’ll come to know this as the Motivational Mam Poster Putsch.”
The tweet followed Fianna Fáil’s poor performance in the Dublin Bay South byelection – with candidate Deirdre Conroy taking just 4.6 per cent of first-preference votes, falling well short of Claire Byrne (Green Party), Lynn Boylan (Sinn Féin), James Geoghegan (Fine Gael) and eventual winner Ivana Bacik (Labour).
The byelection performance has prompted fresh discussions about Taoiseach Michael Martin’s leadership of the party. Deputy MacSharry has been an outspoken critic of the Taoiseach since he assumed the role last year – having previously voiced his disappointment at Martin’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and recently calling for him to resign over a polling controversy.
