Youth athletes are on form at a provincial gig
THE Connacht Athletics Children’s Games took place last Saturday at Athlone IT.
A number of Sligo athletics clubs were represented, among them Sligo AC, North Sligo AC, Corran AC and South Sligo AC. Catering for boys and girls
(U-9, U-10 and U-11 age groups), there were events for pairs and for relay teams.
The first three pairs and the first three relay teams progress to the national finals.
The events were sprints (60 metres), 300 metres (U-9), 500 metres (U-10), 600 metres (U-11), long jump, turbo javelin and relays.
The Sligo AC duo of Grace Foley and Sally Rene-McEnroe enjoyed a terrific meet, winning the Girls U-9 60 metres and they also played their part in Sligo AC’s victory in the Girls U-9 Relay.
Their teammates in the relay event were Arwen Hunter and Aoife Cullinane.
Aoife Cullinane and Arwen Hunter combined for third place in the Girls U-9 60 metres event, with Grace Foley and Arwen Hunter working together for top spot in the Girls U-9 300 metres race.
There was another first for Sligo AC in the Boys U-11 60 metres – here Oscar ReneMcEnroe and Glen Carty were the speedy team.
Emily Masterson and Ciara Schmidtmeier ran excellently for North Sligo AC in the Girls U-10 60 metres last Saturday – they finished second overall. Schmidtmeier, in fact, posted the fastest time for her age group in this event – 9.52 seconds. Masterson and Schmidtmeier later joined up with Ailbhe Doherty and Amelia Lang to take fourth place in the Girls U-10 Relay. The list of Sligo results from Athone are detailed below.
