Ex-underage international McDonnell signs for Rovers

Midfielder started out with Shelbourne and played at Ipswich Town during Mick McCarthy’s reign

SLIGO Rovers manager Liam Buckley has said that new signing Adam McDonnell will get his chance to impress. Midfielder McDonnell, 24, is Rovers’ second capture of recent weeks following the arrival of Grange’s Seamas Keogh.

Dubliner McDonnell, a former Republic of Ireland underage international, can play in a variety of midfield roles and, according to Buckley, will be a valuable first team option as Rovers aim to stay at the business end of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division season. McDonnell began his career at Shelbourne and then went to England to join Ipswich Town during Mick McCarthy’s managerial tenure there.

He later played for Aldershot Town and Boreham Wood, a club in England’s National League (the tier below the EFL League Two). Buckley said: “We’re very pleased to bring Adam in. I’ve known of Adam since he was a young kid starting out at Shels with a lot of potential, he’s gone over to England and done very well for the last six or seven years.”

“He brings experience and he’ll be a help to us over the season. We are only at the midway point of the season, so there’s a lot of football to be played.

“Adam can play in a couple of midfield roles, he’s got a lot of quality and he’ll get a chance here.”

“We’re working off a very good squad here but a tight squad on numbers so we will need everyone.”

Buckley continued: “Every player we bring in will get the opportunity and Adam comes into the mix now. He is another good addition to us.” New recruit McDonnell is looking forward to making an impact with Rovers.

“It was a no-brainer to sign for Sligo Rovers. I know what Liam Buckley teams are like, I remember it from playing against St Patrick’s
