Plans for a biomass heat and electricity facility in Finisklin

- By John Bromley

A PLAN for a plant which would produce electricity and heating from biomass (wood) in Sligo town has been revealed this week. A company called Carbon Sole Group Ltd has published notice of their intention to apply for planning permission for a “renewable energy development” at Finisklin. The development is planned for a 3.9 hectare site “in the townland of Finisklin, Finisklin Road”. It will involve the construction of a biomass processing and storage area utilising forestry products, the construction of gasification and menthantion plant including buildings for the production of advanced biofuels.

The company proposes to build a “gasification and combined heat power plant for the production of electricity and heating”.

It is also planned to have a containerised battery storage facility (20mw) and a thermal energy recovery and storage facility including buildings for district heating distribution. There will also be two on-site 38kV electrical substations.

The development will involve a new access from Finisklin Road, including site office, car parking and internal access roads.

On its website Carbon Sole states that it “designs, develops and operates green bioenergy parks to produce renewable energy products delivering cost saving sustainable green energy to towns, residents and employers”. It states it will provide “clean green carbon free renewable energy products including electricity, biofuels and thermal energy (heating) to homes, businesses, industry, commercial and services sectors”.

It also promises to provide “reliable sustainable energy from renewable sources, working with local forestry farming communities”. The company states that “as opposed to a traditional biomass plant where the wood is burnt to produce steam to run an electrical turbine, gasification thermally cracks the wood producing a rich syngas”.

It goes on: “The syngas is then put through an upgrading methanation process producing a renewable gas for use in transport and heating.

“It can be injected into the gas network and trucked off site as it is produced, for delivery to users not on a gas network. The syngas will also be used in a gas combined heat and power plant.”

Carbon Sole says it will provide clean green carbon free renewable energy products, including electricity, biofuels and thermal energy (heating) to homes, businesses, industry, commercial and services sectors.
