THE FOURTH and final day of this year’s Irish Life Health National Juvenile Track and Field Championships – held last Saturday at the home of Tullamore Harriers AC – yielded further medals for Sligo competitors.

The previous weekend saw Sligo’s entrants bring home six medals, including two gold. This time there were three medals, all silver, with Corran AC’s Cian Flynn, Sean McCabe (Sligo AC) and Enniscrone’s Darragh Mulrooney each on the winners’ podium.

Flynn was second home in the final of the Boys U-16 100 metres Hurdles, clocking 14.67 seconds, with McCabe jumping 1.65 metres for second place in the Boys U-16 metres High Jump. McCabe had already taken bronze in the Boys U-16 metres Long Jump. Mulrooney, a member of Ballina’s Moy Valley AC, was runner-up in the Boys U-16 1500 metres. His time here was 4:23.32. The weekend before he was third in the Boys U-16 3,000 metres.

Along with these medal-winning performances, South Sligo’s Riona Luse was fourth in the Girls U-14 75 metres Hurdles final. Sligo’s other finalists were Corran AC’s Elizabeth Tighe (Girls U-18 100 metres Hurdles) and South Sligo AC’s Caoimhe McDonagh (Girls U-18 Long Jump). Meanwhile, Dromore West runner Keelan Kilrehill recently set a new PB for the 5,000 metres distance at a British Milers Club Grand Prix in Loughborough. U-23 runner Kilrehill, competing in the Men’s 5,000 metres ‘B’ race at that meet, was fourth in his event on a time of 14:18.43. This is also a record for his club, Moy Valley AC (Ballina).
