Alleged Sligo ‘crime boss’ is arrested on his way to Spain

-

A national newspaper reported yesterday, Wednesday, that a man suspected of running an organised crime group in Sligo was arrested at Dublin Airport. The Irish Daily Star reported that the man was on his way to Spain when armed gardaí arrested him as he tried to fly out of the country.

The suspect, according to the paper’s crime correspondent Michael O’Toole, is in his late 30s. He was taken from the airport to Sligo Garda station for questioning on suspicion of directing a crime gang.

Gardaí have been cracking down on organised criminal gangs in Sligo for some time now. Speaking at a Joint Policing Committee meeting held in Sligo in March of 2021, Chief Superintendent Aidan Glacken first revealed that gardaí in Sligo have 15 “primary targets” among five organised criminal gangs operating in the area.

He also said that gardaí were compiling profiles of the assets of 21 people in the region, assets which they believe are the proceeds of crime.
