Cartron United increase their lead at the summit

Super League leaders are now seven points clear of holders Carbury FC as silverware race begins to heat up

CARTRON United have strengthen­ed their grip at the top of the Sligo Southern Hotel Super League. Last Sunday the title hopefuls defeated fourth-placed MCR FC 2-0 at Sean Fallon Park with goals from Enda McGowan, who converted a spot-kick after 20 minutes, and Donal Gallagher, who netted with a fine strike in the second-half. The result – Cartron United’s 12th win from 14 games – extends the leaders’ advantage to seven points. Holders Carbury weren’t in action on Sunday last because their scheduled game away to Cliffoney Celtic was postponed due to an unplayable pitch in Mullaghmor­e. Carbury, still unbeaten this season, have three games in hand. This game was re-arranged for last night, Wednesday, at MacSharry Park’s astroturf pitch. Strand Celtic, who are third in the table, were 4-0 winners at home against second from bottom Real Tubber on Saturday night at the all-weather astroturf pitch in The Showground­s.
