Commonwealth and Euro Championships medallist has ties to Sligo town
A SCOTTISH athlete with Sligo roots has continued her impressive summer with a third medal in major competition in a matter of weeks.
On Monday Eilish McColgan (pictured right), representing Great Britain, picked up a silver medal in the Women’s 10,000 metres run at the European Championships in Munich.
McColgan finished with a time of 30:41.05, little under 10 seconds shy of gold medalist Yasemin Can from Turkey.
This followed a remarkable showing at the Commonwealth Games earlier this month where, representing Scotland, she won a gold medal in the 10,000m and silver in the 5,000m in Birmingham.
The 10,000m gold was especially poignant as her mother, Liz McColgan, won the same competition at the Commonwealth Games in 1986 and 1990.
Eilish McColgan is connected to Sligo through her great-grandfather, a native of St Joseph’s Terrace who moved to Dundee as a young adult.
Many of Eilish and Liz’ relatives still live in Sligo today.
