Rovers celebrate history with Heritage Week open day
SLIGO Rovers Heritage Group participated in National Heritage Week by hosting an ‘open day’ at The Showgrounds outdoor museum on Sunday last, August 21.
A steady stream of visitors called to the ground throughout the day. Members of the Heritage Group were in attendance to guide visitors around the museum and to explain the fascinating background stories to many of the exhibits featuring famous faces from across the club’s storied history. It was apt that the first person through the gates – Tommy McSharry – has the rare distinction of being born in The Showgrounds. Tommy was raised in the ground with his parents Margaret and Charles, his sisters Anna, Alice and Maye, and his brother Mickey. Other visitors included a granddaughter of the legendary Nancy Callaghan and a godson of Mamie O’Shea, another famous figure who features among the exhibits. A Limerick family with connections in Treacy Avenue said the facility was the envy of other League of Ireland clubs.
