SPORT ROUND-UP
Run in Calry in memory of Ray Flynn
One of Sligo’s sporting legends, the late Ray Flynn, will be remembered on Saturday week, September 3, when the Ray Flynn Memorial Run takes place. This 5k run/ walk, using an out and back course in Calry, is organised by Flynn’s club Calry AC. It starts at 7pm from Calry Community Park, Hazelwood. There are category prizes for the first three finishers overall (male and female), with prizes also for the first over-40 finishers (male and female), first juniors (male and female) and first walkers (male and female).
The entry fee is €15 per participant. Enter online via coretiming.ie. Proceedings from this event, which has an AAI permit, will go to the Irish Heart Foundation and the Sligo Mental Health Association.
Calry man Ray Flynn, known locally, nationally and internationally through his exceptional work in athletics as a competitor, coach, pundit and administrator, died suddenly in April of this year.
Former ‘West’ winner takes Tour prize
Golf Ireland’s Men’s Bridgestone Tour for 2022 has been won by Hugh Foley, who won last year’s West of Ireland Championship at Rosses Point.
This year’s West of Ireland, which took place in April when Alan Fahy took the honours, was one of 10 ranking events in the Men’s Bridgestone Tour. Royal Dublin Golf Club’s Foley won two of these events, the North of Ireland Championship and the South of Ireland Championship, achievements that helped him register 1,168 ranking points and claim the Order of Merit prize.
County Sligo Golf Club’s TJ Ford was 36th in the Men’s Bridgestone Tour overall standings and Aodhagan Brady, also of County Sligo, was 59th. Sean McLoughlin, another Sligo golfer who plays out of County Sligo, was placed 72nd, with Ruairi O’Connor (155th, tied) and David Brady (163rd, tied) also on the list. Rosses Point’s Sean Flanagan, now a member of Portmarnock GC, was 48th in the standings.
Club hurling is back on this weekend
The Sligo Senior Hurling Championship resumes this weekend with round four, the penultimate series of fixtures taking place. Holders Easkey, who currently top the standings with three wins from three games, are away to Calry-St Joseph’s on Saturday (Hazelwood, 6.30pm). There are two games on Sunday – Tourlestrane host Western Gaels (1pm) and last year’s finalists Naomh Eoin have home advantage for their clash with Coolera-Strandhill (Kent Park, 3pm).
Tubbercurry GC win a Connacht title in Gort
Tubbercurry Golf Club were recent winners of the Connacht area final of the AIG Women’s Challenge
Cup, a national inter-club competition organised by
Golf Ireland. In the decider, which was played at Gort Golf Club on the Saturday before last, August 13, Tubbercurry defeated Athlone, winning 3-2.
BIT O’SUPPORT: A section of the Sligo Rovers fans who were at Ballybofey’s Finn Park last Friday night for the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division fixture between Rovers and Finn Harps. The home side won 3-2.

area final of the AIG Women’s Minor Cup, which also took place on August 13, Strandhill Golf Club were provincial runners-up – they lost to Westport, 3-2.
