Monthly awards for outstanding forwards Keena and Doherty

-

TWO of the best strikers to play for Sligo Rovers in recent years, Aidan Keena and Emma Doherty, have been honoured.

Keena, the current top scorer with the club’s senior men’s team, has been named the SSE Airtricity-Soccer Writers Ireland Player of the Month for July and Doherty, a key part of Rovers’ first-ever senior women’s team, is the SSE Airtricity Women’s National League Player of the Month for June and July.

Mullingar native Keena, 23, scored five goals for Rovers in July across three competitions – the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division, UEFA Europa Conference League (qualifying rounds) and Extra.ie FAI Men’s Cup.

This is Keena’s second time to win a SSE Airtricity-Soccer Writers Ireland Player of the Month award – he was also the POTM for March.

One of Keena’s team-mates, centre-back Shane Blaney, was also shortlisted for the July award, while another Rovers player, fullback Paddy Kirk, was a nominee for the June prize. Keena, a former Republic of Ireland underage international, has scored 16 goals so far – his latest goals were the two he netted against Finn Harps last Friday night in a 3-2 loss for Rovers.
