“It’s not often a player gets Player of the Month [award] twice in a season and it’s nothing less than he deserves.

“There is still a lot more to come from Aidan because he has the desire to improve himself and improve the team.”

Rovers’ inaugural

season in the SSE Airtricity Women’s National League, Buncrana’s Emma Doherty is the club’s first SSE Airtricity WNL Player of the Month recipient.

Doherty, who won the award for June and July, scored two goals against WNL champions Shelbourne at The Showground­s at the end of last month. “I was delighted to be nominated, never mind win it [the award],” said Doherty, 18. “Our win over Shelbourne [in July] was class, especially as the TV cameras, thanks to TG4, were here as well.

“I think we have achieved a lot this season but we still have to try to get as many points as we can.

“My advice for any young girls getting involved in team sport is to enjoy it and make the most of it. I would love to see the Women’s National League develop going into the future and that more teams would enter it.” Gurteen’s Roisin Molloy, who has been in top form for Athlone Town, was shortliste­d for the award that went to Doherty. Keena and Doherty were presented with their awards at The Showground­s on Thursday last – making the presentati­on was Leanne Sheill, SSE Airtricity League Marketing Manager.
