Lillies weekly jazz club

A jazz club is taking place upstairs in Lillies on Bridge Street every Thursday.

Eddie Lee, Sam Purcell and Nils Kavanagh perform at 7pm each week.

This is a free event.

A Night of Grief and Mystery

Tonight, Thursday, there will be an improbable, impossible night of words and music will take place at the Avalon Centre.

A Night of Grief and Mystery combines stories and observatio­ns from Stephen Jenkinson drawn from his work in palliative care with original songs from Canadian recording artist Gregory Hoskins and band.

The two artists have been exploring the intersecti­on of their work for seven years, across three continents, through three recordings and two short films and head out again in the Fall of 2022 bringing with them Adam Bowman on drums, Colleen Hodgson on bass/vocals, and Lisa Hodgson on keys/vocals. Starts at 7.30pm.

Michael Collins at the Omniplex

On Tuesday, September 6, to commemorat­e the 100th anniversar­y of the death of Michael Collins, Fine Gael have teamed up with Omniplex to screen the Neil Jordan blockbuste­r Michael Collins at 7pm.

The first time since its release 26 years ago, the film will be screened nationwide.

This is a special screening and tickets will only be available through eventbrite.ie

Brick expo at Clayton Hotel

On Sunday, Shamrock Bricks are bringing their Brick Expo to the Clayton Hotel in Ballinode.

There will be lots of activities for everyone including amazing custom models and official sets on display, Lego play areas, face painting, speedbuild competitio­ns, master builder competitio­ns, Lego colouring area, scavenger hunts, as well as competitio­ns, raffles, vendors and lots more fun activities.

There will be a sensory play area and safe zone making this a socially inclusive and fully accessible event. Ticket prices are €5 for adults,

Informal music afternoon

This Sunday, September 4, there will be an Informal Music Afternoon at The Model.

Informal Music Afternoons are a series of monthly events, where an eclectic mix of music is performed in a welcoming format in The Model’s Atrium space.

The ideas behind the concerts are to introduce concert-goers to develop a new audience for chamber music of all types; and to provide a new platform for instrument­alists from the Sligo area and beyond.

Sligo musicians Jessie Whitehead and Luke Devaney (guitars, voc., fiddle), will perform a program of original songs and covers. Admission is €8 (free admission for kids).

Channel Cup Swim in Rosses Point

The annual Channel Cup Swim takes place in Rosses Point on Saturday, September 10.

Online registrati­on is now open for the swim with 100 places available. This year swimmers can chose to swim either a competitiv­e or social swim.

All swimmers will start from Tommy’s Island.

There will be a female and male competitiv­e pod who will compete for a first and second place trophy in each category.

Swimmers who choose a social swim will enter the water in pods of approximat­ely 10 people.

The finish line and exit will be at the slip beside the RNLI station. Swimmers must register in person on Friday, September 9, in Sligo Bay Lifeboat station between 6pm and 8 pm.

The swim is in aid of the RNLI and there will be no refunds issued.

This event will be strictly for over 18s only and wetsuits are compulsory.

A post swim barbeque and presentati­on will then take place later in the evening.

The swim begins at 6.15pm.

Sligo Badminton Club open evening

On Tuesday, September 13, Sligo Badminton Club open evening will take place at 8pm.

They look forward to welcoming beginners and returning members. Badminton is a social sport where our season runs from September to April. Club nights are every Tuesday and Thursday at 8pm.

If you are free, please join them to try out a new sport.

They have an eight week program for beginners to get you up to speed on all things badminton.
