In win over gritty Calry-St Joseph’s

-

evenly-contested compared to an opening period controlled by favourites St Mary’s.

Calry-St Joseph’s were listless in the opening quarter as St Mary’s glided 0-4 to 0-0 ahead by the 14th minute. David Phillips was working hard in defence and it was no surprise that two of the St Mary’s scorers were Emlyn Mulligan and Nathan Rooney.

The first of Daire O’Boyle’s pointed frees got Calry-St Joseph’s on the scoreboard after 14 minutes but Calry-St Joseph’s would only score three more times in the first-half, with St Mary’s scoring twice that amount. St Mary’s were getting exceptional scores from several sources, including efforts from Emlyn Mulligan and Stephen Coen, with Calry-St Joseph’s

MARREN’S BALL:

Aiden Marren, making his Homeland Senior Football Championship debut for Tourlestrane, in action against Coolera-Strandhill on Saturday last. the ball and turn for goal in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time. The biggest score for Tourlestrane, who pressed, hassled and harried to levels not reached in their unconvincing defeats of CoolaneyMullinabreena and St Farnan’s, was their second-half goal.

It started with a Coolera-Strandhill turnover in the 44th minute.

Adrian McIntyre mopped up the wayward pass from a red jersey, then Gary Gaughan and James Leonard got involved. Adrian McIntyre was back on the ball and from this a swift counter-attack began.

Conan Marren transferred possession to Kenny Gavigan and he traded passes with John Francis Carr. Gavigan played the final ball to Oisin Kennedy, who found the net. having to wait until the third minute of stoppage time for their first score from play – a booming point by Damien O’Boyle.

The margin was seven points after a classy 34th minute point from Stephen Coen and St Mary’s, who made too many mistakes to counteract the good stuff that they did, could have ran riot had Calry-St Joseph’s goalkeeper Aidan Devaney not saved Michael Munnelly’s goal shot from a Nathan Rooney assist.

That save from Devaney, who also seized on the loose ball after his parry of Munnelly’s goalbound shot, lifted Calry-St Joseph’s, both collectively and individually.

Calry-St Joseph’s outscored St Mary’s over the next 26 minutes, 1-7
