Clubs aim to avoid the drop

TUBBERCURRY have won the Sligo Senior Football Championship on a record number of occasions – 20 times – but that will count for nothing this Saturday as they aim to maintain their Homeland Senior Football Championship status for another term. In same sinking boat called relegation are Curry, Coolaney-Mullinabreena and St Farnan’s.

Tubbercurry, who finished bottom of Group One after four losses from four games, are up against CoolaneyMullinabreena in a relegation semi-final at Tourlestrane (5pm). This is a repeat of last year’s relegation semi-final, a game that Coolaney-Mullinabreena won on penalties after matters were deadlocked following extra-time. Coolaney-Mullinabreena, who finished second from

?? ?? bottom in Group Two, are depleted for this weekend’s task following injuries sustained by Criostóir Davey and Enda Kivlehan in last Sunday’s heavy loss to Coolera-Strandhill. Saturday’s other relegation semi-final, which takes place at Cloonacool (5pm), St Farnan’s (bottom of Group Two, zero wins) take on Curry (second from bottom in Group One, one win). St Farnan’s are in real danger of returning to the Intermediate grade, having won this tier last year.
Despite promising displays against the likes of Tourlestrane and Coolera-Strandhill, they were undone by defensive frailties in their subsequent two games where they conceded 11 goals. Curry and St Farnan’s met in the 2021 Furey’s Coaches SFL Division Two final, a game that St Farnan’s won, although Curry were understrength.
