Ballymote meeting to discuss concerns over mart’s future

-

A LARGE number of people were expected to attend a public meeting last night (Wednesday) in relation to the future of Ballymote Mart.

The meeting was due to take place in the Coach House Hotel in Ballymote.

The meeting was called after concerns over the future of the mart facility were expressed after news that a member of the management team is set to take up an alternative role. Cllr Michael Clarke, cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, himself a farmer, is one of six people co-opted at an earlier meeting held a week ago where the mart’s future was discussed. He has called on mart owners Aurivo to ensure Ballymote Mart will continue to prosper. He said it is vital for the future of the area that Ballymote Mart is safeguarded.

“Ballymote Mart is the most important economic driver for the town of Ballymote and indeed for the region. When the mart in Ballymote is doing well the town and the whole region thrives.”

The manager of the mart is important in this scenario, he said, adding that cattle numbers at the mart had jumped by 300% in three years.

Ballymote Mart is the last remaining mart in County Sligo. In a statement issued to the Sligo Weekender, Aurivo reaffirmed its commitment to Ballymote Livestock Mart.

“Given recent public remarks surrounding Ballymote Mart, Aurivo Co-op would like to reaffirm its position that it is fully committed to its Mart business and to supporting the trading of livestock in the area. Ballymote Mart is a successful operation andhashadcontinuedsuccessdespitethechallengesof thepandemic in recent years.

“Aurivo would like to wish David Faughnan, the outgoing Ballymote Mart Manager, the very best in his new position. “Aurivo is actively seeking to appoint a successor to replace David and trusts that customers of Ballymote Mart will be supportiveof thisendeavourtoensuretheMart’scontinuedsuccess into the future.”
