-

COUNTY Monaghan is one place that can often be overlooked or forgotten.. But the people, the atmosphere and the beautiful outdoors make Monaghan one of the best places in Ireland to visit for a staycation. Monaghan has some fantastic nature walks and parks. Lough Muckno in Castleblaney, for example, provides gorgeous scenery, great walkways and an adventure playground equipped with ziplines and slides. Lough Muckno’s picnic tables are perfect for a summer lunch among the fairy doors on the forest trail. Fishing is one of the lake’s big attractions. Check out the Lough Muckno Leisure Park page at www. monaghantourism.com for all the details about this beautiful part of Ireland. There are plenty of other walkways and parks to visit in Monaghan, including Emy Lough, Rossmore Forest Park and Ballybay Wetland.Ballybay, in particular, is a great place for birdwatching. All are within a quick drive of the county town. The weather isn’t always great for outdoor activities, of course – but don’t worry. The Monaghan County Museum is a gem in Monaghan town, and the award-winning attraction has been delighting visitors for over 40 years. Currently on show is the exhibition titled ‘Monaghan’s War of Independence 19191921’. Visit www.monaghan. ie/museum for all the details. Another fun activity for the whole family is taking a class at Busy Bee Ceramics. This pottery studio is located in Glaslough village, where pottery classes are provided for every age and ability. There are also various teaching options for both groups and individuals. You’ll come away with a lovely piece of art that you’ve created yourself. Check out www.busybeeceramics.ie to start planning your trip. It’s off the beaten track but with so much to see.
