Ballymote Celtic take over in the Premier race

-

BALLYMOTE Celtic are the new leaders of the Sligo Pallets Premier League.

Last Sunday’s stylish 8-0 hammering of Glenview Stars – who previously led the standings – means that Mark Irwin’s charges are a point clear of second-placed Glenview Stars and Gurteen Celtic.

Ballymote, who are now the only unbeaten side after five rounds, had a goalscoring hero in Cian Kilcoyne, who netted four times against Glenview, with Jason Dwyer (2), Oisin Brennan and Jack Hever also scoring. Gurteen Celtic, who are third in the table, just a point behind Ballymote Celtic, won 4-1 away to KilglassEnniscrone United.

The goalscorers for Gurteen were Luke Devaney, who scored twice, Thomas Sweeney and Ross Donovan. The home side’s consolation goal was scored by Christopher Cawley.

Ballygawley Celtic, who are part of the chasing pack looking up at the top three, recorded an impressive 4-0 home victory against Strand Celtic Reserves. Super striker Cathal Davey landed four goals for the winners – three of these goals came in the first-half.

North Sligo’s Benbulben FC picked up their second win of the season – a 5-1 defeat of Dromahair FC at MacSharry Park. Evan McDonald scored twice for the hosts, for whom Anthony Moylette, Fola Ayorinde and Shane Collis-O’Donovan also on target. Stephen Mullen was Dromahair’s goalscorer.

Elsewhere in the second tier last Sunday, Calry Bohs Reserves won 2-1 at home against Valley Rovers.

The visitors went in front through a goal by Jak Ozdobinski but Calry Bohs Reserves hit back with goals by Dylan McLoughlin and Joseph Farrell, who converted a penalty.

Leitrim’s Carrick Town came from a goal down to beat Chaffpool United 4-1. Goals from the Beirne brothers, Cian and Shane, meant Carrick were 2-1 up at half-time, having recovered from the concession of an early goal.

The hosts netted twice in the second-half – Shane Beirne scored again and David Regan goaled from a excellent free-kick to wrap up what was a fine result.
