Holders Carbury FC return to the summit

-

IN THIS season’s title race, early bragging rights have gone to champions Carbury FC. The holders were 4-0 winners over Cartron United, last season’s runners-up, at MacSharry Park on Sunday last.

This result has returned Carbury to the summit of the Sligo Southern Hotel League, with previous leaders Cartron dropping back to second – only one point worse off.

Lethal striker Jason Lyons netted twice for Carbury to bring his season’s tally up to 12. The second of his goals here was a converted spotkick. Mark McGoldrick and Aaron Murrin also scored for Carbury, who were 2-0 ahead at the break.

Third-placed MCR FC are keeping pace with the top two. They defeated St John’s FC 4-0 at Sean Fallon Park. Ciaran Harvey’s first-half brace put MCR in a strong position for their fourth win of the season.

The second-half saw MCR extend their lead through goals by Donagh Crowne and Kailum Burns.

Last Sunday’s other top tier fixture saw Aughanagh Celtic win 5-1 at home against Cliffoney Celtic. James Kiernan bagged a hattrick for Aughanagh, with Sean Bruen and Daniel Lyons also on target.

Cliffoney’s goal came from James Gallagher, whose strike put the visitors ahead – before the hosts took charge.

Calry Bohs’ 6-0 away win over Ballisodare United was one of two games played on Saturday night. Leading 2-0 midway through, Calry scored four times in the second-half.

Eoin Nicholson was in brilliant form for the winners, scoring five times, while Michael Flynn also netted for the winners.

Also on Saturday night, Strand Celtic won 2-1 at home against Leitrim’s Manor Rangers.

This was a comeback win for Strand, who went a goal down when Philip Patton scored for the visitors.

Dylan Martin’s goal brought Strand level – it was 1-1 at half-time. Aaron O’Boyle supplied the winning goal for Strand in the second-half. Meanwhile, Raffaele Cretaro’s hat-trick illuminated Real Tubber’s 6-3 defeat of Arrow Harps at Ballisodare’s all-weather pitch on Friday night last.

Ciaran Gorman, Matthew Mulhern and Brian Morahan also scored for the winners. The Arrow Harps goalscorers were Niall Kenny (2) and Daire Callaghan.
