Father Ted star Pauline McLynn pays tribute to her late mother

SLIGO-BORN actress Pauline McLynn has paid tribute to her mother Sheila (pictured) who passed away earlier this week.

Best known for her role as Mrs Doyle in the series Father Ted, the actress posted a beautiful picture of her late mother, saying: “So, the Mammy left us this evening – RIP Sheila, you little legend. She went out the gap.”

Formerly of Jinks Avenue, Sligo town, Sheila (née McGowan) of Dunna-Mara, Renmore, Galway, died, very peacefully, on Monday, October 24, at University College Hospital, Galway, with her mourning family Pauline, Ian and Philip, Curly and Jason, by her side.

Sheila was an art teacher and artist.

Her death notice on RIP.ie added: “Deeply mourned also by Josh, Ruby and Ellie, Karen, Richard and Rebecca, her brothers and sisters in Sligo and the UK, the extended family and friends. Pre-deceased by the love of her life Padraig.”

Hundreds of people sent messages to share their condolence­s to the actress who now lives in Kilkenny.

Comedian Deirdre O’Kane wrote: “Oh half life… your brilliant Mammy! All the love my friend.” Pianist and musician Frank McNamara also paid tribute: “So sorry to hear of your Mam’s passing. Sad time. But a wonderful opportunit­y to celebrate her life too. May she rest in peace.”

RTÉ Radio One producer and musician Aonghus McAnally said: “Sending you best wishes to get through this tough time with peace and a celebratio­n of the joy of her life. Hugs.”

Arrangemen­ts for Sheila’s wake and funeral are as follows: Reposing at Áras Naofa, (H91 YV52) within the grounds of the Church of St. Oliver Plunkett, Renmore, tomorrow, Friday, October 28, 2022, from 5pm, with removal at 6.30pm to the adjacent church.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated for Sheila on Saturday morning, October 29, at 11am.
