MCR FC are making their rivals take heed

- Gurteen Celtic register another impressive win

MCR FC remain two points clear – and unbeaten – at the top of the Sligo Southern Hotel Super League. On Sunday last they were 4-1 winners at home to Tubbercurr­y’s Real Tubber. Although the visitors went ahead with a goal by Raffaele Cretaro, MCR levelled matters through a Keith Nibbs penalty.

Jordan Harte’s goal ensured the leaders would be 2-1 up at half-time. They extended their advantage in the second-half with two goals, including one from Donagh Crowne. MCR have a 100% record after six games.

Cartron United, who are second in the standings, are two points behind MCR. Cartron beat Ballisodar­e United 3-2 at MacSharry Park last Sunday.

The winners were 3-1 up at the break – on target in the first-half were Enda McGowan, Brendan Fitzsimons and Donal Gallagher, who scored from a free-kick.

GURTEEN Celtic continue to lead the Sligo Pallets Premier League. The second tier leaders were 6-0 winners away to Strand Celtic Reserves on Sunday last, with Thomas Sweeney scoring a hat-trick.

Also on target for Gurteen were Dylan Walsh, Conor Walsh and Nathan Dwyer. This was Gurteen’s seventh win from eight games. Ballymote Celtic, in second place, weren’t in action because their scheduled game away to Leitrim’s Carrick Town was postponed because both pitches were unplayable and there was no alternativ­e venue available.

Glenview Stars – who are third in the standings, eight points behind the leaders – drew 3-3 with Calry Bohs Reserves at ATU Sligo’s astroturf pitch. Scoring for Glenview were David Lynch, Thomas Myers and Seamus O’Boyle. Ballisodar­e were level for three minutes in that opening half when Adam Grace’s 29th minute goal cancelled out Enda McGowan’s early opener for Cartron. But Brendan Fitzsimons put Cartron back on track three minutes after Grace’s close-range finish. brace from Joe Kilcullen gave Calry Bohs Reserves a draw – they are level on points with Glenview.

Dromahair FC won 3-1 at home against Kilglass-Enniscrone United. The winners were 2-0 up at the break and made it 3-0 two minutes into the second-half. Cartron conceded a second goal with a minute of normal time left – Kevin O’Hara scored with a header for Ballisodar­e – but they held on for a fifth win in seven games.

Coolaney United won 5-3 away to Aughanagh Celtic. It was 2-2 at half-time after an eventful opening period. Daniel Lyons netted two spotkicks for Aughanagh, for whom Liam O’Connell also scored. The Coolaney goalscorer­s were Declan McCormack (2), Jack Somers, Ryan Gillen and Senan Sheehan.

Also last Sunday, St John’s FC were 4-2 winners away to Cliffoney Celtic. Malachy Spratt scored twice for the winners, with Conor Brennan and Leon Clancy also on target. The home side’s goals were both scored by Johnny Boyle. Meanwhile, Strand Celtic won 5-2 at home against Calry Bohs last Saturday night. Ballygawle­y Celtic produced five goals – Ballygawle­y, the away side, won 3-2.

Ballygawle­y, who led 1-0 at the break, later extended their lead to 3-0 and looked secure. But Chaffpool fought back and scored twice. Ballygawle­y’s scorers were Cathal Davey (2) and Hughie McGowan, with Hughie Marren and Cathal Brennan scoring for Chaffpool.

Elsewhere, the scheduled meeting of Manor Rangers and Arrow Harps – in Manorhamil­ton – was abandoned after 25 minutes when the pitch became unplayable following torrential rain.

Rovers. Oisin Gilmartin scored twice for the winners and his second goal – from a 75th minute spot-kick – proved to be the difference. Benbulben’s other scorer was Michael Gilmartin.

Valley Rovers, who were tied at halftime after Oisin Gilmartin’s first goal cancelled out Ciaran Jennings’ 17th minute finish, later levelled matters when Ryan Brennan scored in the second-half – after Michael Gilmartin made it 2-1 to the visitors.
