Rovers honour their leading players SNR MEN’S POTY

SLIGO Rovers Football Club have presented awards to 10 of their leading players from this season. Six of these awards went to members of the Sligo Rovers Academy.

Striker Aidan Keena, the leading scorer for the senior men’s team, was named the Senior Men’s Player of the Year – he topped the online vote for a prize sponsored by Wehrly’s Bros. Jewellers. Mullingar native Keena, has bagged 20 goals in all competitio­ns this season.

The Senior Men’s Young Player of the Year award went to another forward, Max Mata. The New Zealander has scored nine goals – with one game left for him to hit double figures.

Rovers competed in the SSE Airtricity Women’s National League for the first time this year. Two players who have been inspiratio­nal in this debut campaign, midfielder Lauren Boles and striker Emma Doherty, received awards. Dynamic performer Boles was named the Senior Women’s Player of the Year – an award sponsored by Wehrly’s Bros. Jewellers – and the Senior Women’s Young Player of the Year award went to Republic of Ireland U-19 internatio­nal Emma Doherty, who netted 11 times for Rovers in 2022.

Earlier this year Doherty was chosen as the SSE Airtricity WNL Player of the Month for June and July.

In terms of the Sligo Rovers Academy awards, the following six players were honoured: Jamie O’Malley (U-14 Boys Player of the Year); James Lavin (U-15 Boys Player of the Year); Daire Patton (U-17 Men’s Player of the Year); Sean McAteer (U-19 Men’s Player of the Year); Cara King (U-17 Women’s Player of the Year); Katie McGuire (U-17 Women’s Player of the Year). Nine of these 10 awards were presented to the players on Friday and Saturday last at The Showground­s.

SNR WOMEN’S POTY

AWARD: Striker Aidan Keena was named the Sligo Rovers Senior Men’s Player of the Year for 2022. He has scored 20 goals this season, with one game left in the campaign.

U-19 WOMEN’S POTY

Emma Doherty, the Sligo Rovers Senior Women’s Young Player of the Year, is presented with her award by Steve Feeney, manager of the Rovers senior women’s team.
