Chasing pack fail to pressurise Gurteen

-

WITH Gurteen Celtic not playing on Sunday last, the chasing pack had an opportunity to get closer to the Sligo Pallets Premier League leaders. Gurteen’s scheduled fixture at home to Glenview Stars was postponed – Gurteen’s pitch and that of Glenview Stars at Forthill were both unplayable due to last weekend’s heavy rainfall. There were no all-weather pitches available.

But second-placed Ballymote Celtic were unable to close the gap because they drew 5-5 at home against Benbulben FC. At half-time it was 3-2 to north Sligo’s Benbulben. Ballymote scored three times in the second-half to go 5-2 up, but Benbulben earned their second draw of the season with a recovery that yielded two goals.

On target for the hosts were Jack Hever and Oisin Brennan, each of whom scored twice, and Cian Kilcoyne – this was Kilcoyne’s 16th goal of the campaign.

Benbulben’s four goalscorers included Oisin Gilmartin (2), Fola Ayorinde, Michael Gilmartin and Evan McDonald.

Calry Bohs Reserves are up to third in the standings – seven points behind Gurteen Celtic – following their 3-3 home draw with Dromahair FC.

It was all square at the break, 2-2, in a fixture that saw Dromahair equalise each time that the home side scored. The players on target for Calry Bohs Reserves were Declan Lee, Dario Williams and Joe Kilcullen.

Sean Conlon scored twice for Dromahair – his second goal made it 3-3 in the closing stages – and Luke Tansey also scored for the visitors. Ballygawley Celtic and Carrick

Town shared the spoils in a six-goal thriller. Ballygawley, the home side, looked odds-on to win as they led 3-0 by the 65th minute thanks to goals from Cathal Davey (2) and Hughie McGowan.

The clash of Kilglass-Enniscrone United and Chaffpool United was abandoned in the second-half because of an injury sustained by a Chaffpool player.

Carrick’s fine comeback produced three goals, with the third coming in stoppage time.

The Leitrim club’s scorers were

Stephen Flynn (2) and Kyle McNabola. Meanwhile, last Friday night saw Valley Rovers win 4-2 away to Strand Celtic Reserves.

The visitors led 3-0 at half-time thanks to first-half goals from Callum Moore, Karl Jennings and Jake Tobin. Strand fought back, however, and Jamie Walsh’s converted penalty and a goal by Matthew Miley left just a goal between the teams with 68 minutes played.

A second goal from Callum Moore steadied the ship for Valley Rovers, who eventually won 4-2.
