20-goal ace Keena is part of an elite group

-

STRIKER Aidan Keena’s 20th goal of the season put him into an exclusive club at Sligo Rovers – he is now one of only 17 players who have scored at least 20 goals in one season for the Bit O’Red in all competitions.

The last player to hit the 20-goal mark in a single campaign was Dubliner Eoin Doyle, who tallied 25 goals in 2011. Coincidentally, he was on the pitch last Friday night as a St Patrick’s Athletic player when Keena scored the penalty that gave Rovers a 1-0 win. Mullingar native Keena, whose tally so far is a mixture of Premier Division (17), European (2) and FAI Cup goals, has one game left to add to his 20-goal haul – this Sunday’s away game against Bohemians at Dalymount Park.

Freddie Dykes scored the most goals for Rovers in a single season (in all competitions) when he netted 37 times in the 1933-34 campaign.

2022: Aidan Keena (20); 2011: Eoin Doyle (25); Padraig Amond (23); 2009: Raffaele Cretaro (21); 1980-81: Brendan Bradley (21); 1975-76: Mick Leonard (21); 1960-61: Damien Bradley (21); 1955-56: Johnny Armstrong (22), Johnny Walsh (20); 1939-40: Joe McAleer (21); 1936-37: Harry Litherland (29); 1935-36: Gerry McDaid (29); 1934-35: Gerry McDaid (35); 1933-34: Paddy Monaghan (22), Freddie Dykes (37), James Callaghan (35); 1931-32: Frank Fallon (26).
