Spanish Armada research archive donated to Sligo Central Library

THE archive of Leslie Huggard (1913 – 2021) has been donated to Sligo Local Studies and Archive by his daughter Rachel Wetherall.

Leslie Huggard explored Sligo’s coastline in his efforts to find the Spanish Armada, and although he was unsuccessful, his archive provides an insight into cross-border life during the Troubles as well as wider context around the search for the Armada ships.

Items of interest include graphs, maps, and charts, as well as correspondence which details successful exploration trips in 1971,1974 and 1977, as well as trips which had to be cancelled due to the ongoing violence in 1970 and 1972. The letters reference other diving clubs and their explorations, as well as the advancements in diving equipment.

This collection is currently being catalogued by the archive and is available for reference from the libarary on request.
