THE need for safety reasons for a handrail or steps to be installed at a new graveyard in Sligo which is located on a steep hill was raised this week.

The newer area at Knockbrack Graveyard, Keash, is, as Cllr Dara Mulvey pointed out at Monday’s BallymoteTubbercurry municipal district meeting, on a very steep incline with a concrete path. The gradient of which is so steep it is challenging and, indeed, potentially dangerous for older people and those with limited mobility. He suggested a handrail or steps should be installed. He said: “The gradient is very steep and is challenging and can be dangerous for older people and those with limited mobility.”

In a reply from Sligo County Council, he was told the existing path is only 0.9 metres wide. Providing a handrail would restrict access along this narrow path. The path would need to be widened to two metres to facilitate a handrail. He was also informed there is no current funding available for this.
